Lt. Col. Don Appling 1915-2007 - Co-Founder and Benefactor

      World's Oldest Competitive 3-weapon Fencer!

It all started with a phone call from a person looking to visit our club to fence for the night . Little did I know that call would lead to such a wonderful meeting .
When I first met Lt Col Don Appling now retired and living in  Hawaii he was in Howell  to visit his sister and found that there was a fencing club in town. He came to our club and impressed us all on how well he moved and how well he still fenced you see Don is 90 years old . And it turns out that he is the worlds oldest living 3 weapon competitive fencer When I fenced him he scored quite a few touches on me in epee and beat me in saber . I was completely impressed with him   and it turns out he was pretty impressed with Liberty Lakes Fencing Club , so much so he made a donation to the club and we were able to purchase some much needed equipment . but it didn’t stop there Don and I kept in touch I read some articles on him and was just amazed on what an amazing man he truly was .  It turns out that Don , a Hartland native was so pleased that there was a fencing club in his home town that he just had to be a part of the organization so with the help of attorney Dave Bittner in march of 2005 Liberty Lakes Fencing Club of Hartland Michigan  LLC   was born this non profit LLC was set up to promote the sport of fencing in Michigan . And though Don lives in paradise he plays a very active role in our organization . We   host an annual  USFA tournament that  bears his name in honor of his kindness and life's dedication to the sport of fencing please take the time to link to the articles on Don and you will see what a truly amazing man he is and we are proud to have him on our board of directors!

Don passed away quietly in his home in Hawaii on 2-14-2007. He competed in the Hawaiian open the Saturday before his passing, a dedicated competitor till the very end. There are so many posts on fencing.net,   it was so nice to see how many people loved and admired him he will be always missed and never forgotten

Mission Statement:

Goals and Accomplishments:

We are a young club that has a great start and a solid base that includes several thousand dollars in equipment, a loyal membership that is based in both competitive and non-competitive members.  We Are looking forward to hosting youth and novice level tournaments, as we see a need in the Michigan Division for these level of competitions.  We are also looking to expand our equipment base to an additional electronic scoring machine and modern practice equipment.  We recently held our first annual club picnic, which was a great success!  Over 70 members, friends, and family, attended!  SEE THE PHOTOS!  We are also involved in the Brighton 4th of July Parade and have done several demonstrations and clinics in the community.  We are not just a club, we are friend and family who share a passion for the great sport and tradition of fencing.
